Monastero Santa Rosa Hotel & Spa, Amalfi
Opened in June 2012, the Monastero Santa Rosa Spa recently received the accolade ‘Best Newcomer 2013’ by Tatler – an annual industry ‘badge of honour’ given to the finest emerging Spa on the world stage today. The Spa will consequently feature ‘up front’ within the Tatler Spa Guide 2013. Additionally, the Santa Rosa Spa along with Armani/SPA Milan [another of Howard Spa Consulting’s projects] was picked by Architectual Digest for its October 2012 article ‘11 of the Best-Designed Spas Around the World’. Monastero Santa Rosa, located on the edge of a bluff between Positano and Amalfi sets new standards in South Italy. With a stunning Spa Suite, Treatment Garden, and a Thermal Suite consisting of a collection of vaulted spaces inter-connecting the various warm rooms via arched openings & level changes….a discovery is around each corner. A Spa Day at Monastero Santa Rosa also takes in the gardens that cascade to an infinity edged pool, seemingly embracing the panoramic views from the edge of a towering cliff facade dropping dramatically to the calm azure of the Amalfi Coast.
The Project Brief
From the outset the owner required the Spa to draw upon the unique integrity of the convent’s character - not to follow pre-determined formulae that a brand would impose upon us. Our independent approach, adeptness in creating spa concepts to enhance the ‘integrity of place’, and on-going work with premier hotels fits well with the owner’s philosophy.
The major constraints of a prominent historical building can be challenging. However, we accepted that the constraints of the existing formed spaces should work in our favour rather than against us. The essence of our approach was to allow the building to tell us what best suited it, and join spaces together to form a flowing experience.
Each room within the Spa preserves the original 17th C vaulted ceilings and many of its rustic walls to maintain the monastic heritage of this beautiful property. The Italian heritage of bathing within a series of thermal rooms is presented at Monastero Santa Rosa by maintaining the intriguing character of many of the original rooms. Our Thermal Suite interconnects a series of interesting historic monastic spaces including a stunning double height vaulted Tepidarium (warm relaxing room), a domed aromatic Steam Room, a Crushed Ice fountain to refresh between thermal bathing, a Rock Sauna, vaulted Hydro Pool and Emotion Showers.
The treatments draw upon the ancestral traditions of Italian monastic herbalists dating back to the 14th century – totally unique to the Monastero Santa Rosa using Italian plants and flowers renowned for their healing powers as traditionally grown in the grounds of monasteries and convents. One of the exceptional treatment rooms is the private double Spa Suite (A Private SPA within a SPA). A magnificent 80sq.m double height vaulted space with Rasul, steam room, double wet & dry treatment couches, manicure/pedicure, relaxation lounge, private dressing and grooming space, ... and a private garden terrace - a 'private spa within a spa' for up to 4 guests. Alternatively, guests can enjoy the panoramic views of the Amafli Coast from the Treatment Garden.
'Italy’s Amalfi Coast can finally claim a destination spa worthy of the area’s romance and sophistication. Carved into the building’s barrel-vaulted stone foundations, the ingenious four-level spa’s rock sauna, aromatic steam room, ice fountain, hydro pool, tepidarium (based on the one found at Pompeii), and large treatment rooms—including a huge double-height spa suite—occupy a variety of seamlessly interconnected nooks and alcoves. The spa continues outside, with treatment pavilions. Therapies use botanical products from the 800-year-old Florentine beauty brand Santa Maria Novella, rarely seen in hotel spas'.
